Susan Loesser recalled that her father had little regard for the song and “referred to ‘Thumbelina’ as an insignificant little ditty, not a real song. Whenever he wanted to make a point about a cheap song, his own or someone else’s, he would mention ‘Thumbelina’. He never gave himself credit for writing exactly what the scene required: a charming ‘little ditty’ meant to entertain a small child.”
