Family Susan

Born in New York City in 1944, Susan Loesser was educated at The Lenox School in Manhattan and Bennington College in Vermont. Always drawn to the arts, she majored in fine art in college, but gravitated toward the written word in her early twenties. She wrote articles on crafts for Family Circle magazine, answered reader mail at Life magazine, and copyedited and indexed books for the publisher John Wiley & Sons.

The world of books and the world of fine art have always competed for dominance in Susan's life. She worked as a painter and a potter in the early 1970s, and, with three other women, owned and operated a pottery studio in New York’s upper west side. In the 1980s and early ‘90s, Her love of books led to her position as the librarian of New York Hospital's patients' library. In 1990 she decided to try her hand at writing her own book.

Her memoir of her father, Frank Loesser, “A Most Remarkable Fella,” was first published in 1993, and is now available in paperback from Hal Leonard Publishers. (available here)

The natural world has always been a meaningful part of Susan’s life. Hiking, birding, gardening, and nature photography have consistently occupied her free time. She is an active member and supporter of several environmental organizations, and lives with her husband in Edgewater, New Jersey, where she is active in her community’s fight for nature conservation, historic preservation, and sane municipal growth.

Susan now devotes herself primarily to her art. Her imaginary landscapes (www.LoesserLandscapes.com), in gouache and ink on paper, reflect her feelings about the natural world and create intimate fantasies -- places of welcome and peace.
